About the Book
The Sundarban is globally known as the home of the Bengal Tiger—but beyond the tiger’s shadow lies a rich, thriving kingdom of birds. Often overlooked, the Sundarban is in fact the wealthiest bird habitat among all forests in Bangladesh, serving as a sanctuary to over 300 of the country’s 700 recorded bird species.
Yet, much about the avian population of this vast mangrove remains unknown. Questions persist: How many species truly reside here? Which birds breed in this habitat, and which merely pass through as migrants? How do they survive despite environmental challenges and human encroachment?
Unlike the tigers, crocodiles, or dolphins of the Sundarban, birds have never been the subject of a formal, comprehensive census. In Birds of the Sundarban, we attempt to bridge that gap by presenting visual and descriptive information on 269 bird species observed directly or indirectly. We do not claim this number to be complete—but rather, a documented glimpse into a much larger, possibly unexplored avian diversity.
This book is both a record and a call—to discover, protect, and appreciate the feathered wonders of this extraordinary forest.
